Mogadishu (UM) – senior sources in Parliament have confirmed that many MPs oppose paying the income tax imposed on them by the Ministry of Finance. Umadda Media can confirm that the Minister of Finance, Dr. Abdirahman Duale Beileh, wrote to the Speaker of Federal Parliament Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawaari in the weeks previous to request that Parliament cooperate in this policy endeavour to raise further domestic revenue.
A MP that spoke on the condition of anonymity said that Parliamentarians are unlikely to pay taxes until the rules that allowed them to be exempt in the last midterm budget is reversed by Parliament.
The payment of taxes by MPs is also an International Monetary Fund Staff Monitoring Program benchmark which must be fulfilled for the Federal Government to succeed in the upcoming December review.
